The Writing Centers offer support services to all students who request assistance with writing and reading.  That assistance consists primarily of the practice and development of effective strategies for composing and comprehension; however, the Writing Centers offer other services as well.  It offers orientation sessions to show clients how to use its services most effectively.  It helps clients with correct usage and proofreading, and it directs them to websites where they can reinforce their skills with exercises.

Mission – The Writing Centers provide personal support to all University students through a variety of delivery systems.  We assist at any phase of the writing process, empowering our students to become more effective writers, thinkers, and learners as we help them achieve their academic, professional and personal goals.

Vision – We aim to provide a warm, welcoming center for campus writing activities, supporting excellence in academic, professional and personal writing among faculty, staff, and students.  We interact synergistically with other writing projects and programs on campus, helping them to thrive.

College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Certification
The UVI Writing Center on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix earned accreditation through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). This is a very high level certification for a university student support center to earn.  The CRLA provides guidelines for the training and certification of tutors and tutoring services and support. The tutors will continue to provide excellent service as they work with students.  Please join us on the Albert A. Sheen Campus at our internationally certified Writing Center and congratulate our two certified tutors: Joey Emmanuel and Arige Shrouf.

  • Empowering writers for the long term:  We support writers within appropriate boundaries; we do not encroach on the role of the teacher by attempting to evaluate or grade student writing; we assist students in their work, but never do it for them; we maintain appropriate confidentiality for all clients.
  • Ethical interactions with clients:  We maintain a center that is a pleasant place to be, staffed by people who are enjoyable to work with.  Clients can rely on our friendliness, enthusiasm, and positive attitude.
