UVI Students Lead Effort to Win the Home Depot’s “Retool Your School” Grant

The University of the Virgin Islands is currently in sixth place out of 23 moderately sized Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that are participating in The Home Depot “Retool Your School” Campus Improvement Grant Program. Seventy-one schools are participating overall. This program, currently in its eighth year, was developed by Home Depot Store Support Inc. to recognize and encourage innovative projects that enhance the campuses of America’s treasured Historically Black Colleges and Universities. read more

UVI Astronomers Granted Access to World’s Largest Telescopes

Astronomers at the University of the Virgin Islands were granted access to two of the world’s largest telescopes in Chile and Hawaii by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO). Scientists, collaborators and students will now be better equipped to study gamma-ray bursts (GRB), explosive phenomena generated by exploding stars 30 to 100 times larger than our sun. These may be the first generation of stars ever to have formed in the universe, which makes their analysis critical to our deepening understanding of the formation of the universe. read more

The Herman E. Moore Golf Course at the University of the Virgin Islands will be abuzz with food, fun and fellowship on Sunday, March 19, 2017, as the community gathers for the 28th annual Afternoon on the Green. The theme for this year’s event, which will be open to the public from noon – 5 p.m. is “A Centennial Celebration of Delicacies.” All proceeds from Afternoon on the Green (AOTG) will support the Edward E. Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Awards. read more

UVI Student Researcher Awarded AES;CES Scholarship

The University of the Virgin Islands Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) and Cooperative Extension Service (CES) granted Samuel Joseph a $500 scholarship. Joseph, a junior Information Systems and Technology major on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, received the scholarship check along with a certificate on Jan. 31, 2017, at the first AES student research meeting of spring 2017 semester. read more

Nine UVI Students Receive $750 Business Design Grants

Nine students have successfully completed the second Business Design Grants Program (BDGP) at the University of the Virgin Islands, the first step on the road to victory in the annual 13D Entrepreneurship competition where students compete for $60,000 in cash resources to launch their viable business proposals. Those who completed the Business Design Grants Program were each awarded a $750 grant. read more

Humpback Whales were spotted in the waters at John Brewers Bay

Humpback Whales Sighted in Brewers Bay Near UVI

Two humpback whales and a calf were spotted on Monday, Feb. 13, in Brewers Bay, near the University of the Virgin Islands in the early morning hours. Bystanders suspect that one of the whales gave birth to the calf last night in the bay, but this is unconfirmed. read more
