St. Croix SGA to Host Annual Shadowing Our Students Program on Nov. 21

The third annual Student Government Association Shadowing Our Students (SOS) program on UVI’s Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 21. The program – titled SOS: Planting the Seed – will bring some 165 students in the fifth and sixth grades from St. Croix elementary schools out to UVI’s campus for a day of mentoring and relationship building with UVI students. Some 30 UVI student volunteers will be participating.

The goal is to increase awareness of the benefits of higher education, while highlighting the many opportunities for advancement available at UVI. Students will see first-hand the wealth of academic opportunity, professional development initiatives and extra-curricular activities offered. They will also shadow students in their prospective fields of study and attend a structured UVI social event.

A special addition to this year’s program will be a presentation by author and professional development trainer Tish Norman, the founder of Transforming Leaders Now, Inc., a consulting company that provides educational programs in leadership and personal development. Norman, an award-winning speaker has addressed audiences in 39 states, as well as Ireland, Scotland, Australia, the UK and The British Virgin Islands.

The SOS event will also include information on the college application process and funding options. Students will engage in group discussions, mock classes and hear a motivational speaker. The SGA effort is designed to complement UVI's existing recruitment effort. The day-long activity begins at 8 a.m. in the UVI Great Hall.
