Book Signing for “The Quelbe Commentary 1672-2012” Set for Dec. 20 at Paiewonsky Library

A book signing and discussion of author Dale Francis’ most recent publication – The Quelbe Commentary 1672-2012: Anthropology in Virgin Islands Music – will be hosted at the Paiewonsky Library on UVI’s St. Thomas Campus from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20. It is open to the Virgin Islands public.

Francis, who has also written The Quelbe Method: Music Fundamentals in Quelbe Ensembles, delves into the rich heritage and contemporary culture of Virgin Islands Society. He examines and chronicles the foundational cultures and genres that contributed to Quelbe music during the period of 1672 to 2012. Francis says the new publication will help the reader “discover the ancient secret in the Bamboula art form, the power of Cariso, freedom in Quelbe, and learn how the music of the Virgin Islands continues to retain traditional elements despite contemporary influences.”

Limited copies of “The Quelbe Commentary” may be purchased at the event. Additional copies may be purchased from the publisher at or contact the author at
