UVI’s Spring Semester Begins Jan. 14; New Student Orientation Set for Jan. 8 – 11

Spring semester classes at the University of the Virgin Islands are scheduled to begin on Monday, Jan. 14. Online registration for continuing UVI students is available, with access through the University’s BanWeb registration and mycampus portal. Late registration for new and continuing students is set for Friday, Jan. 11. UVI Mourns the Loss of First CVI President, Dr. Lawrence Wanlass

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the first president of the University of the Virgin Islands, Dr. Lawrence Wanlass, passed away in California. He is survived by his wife, Anita, and their four children. For nearly two decades – from 1962 to 1980 – Wanlass worked to establish the then College of the Virgin Islands and to create a world-class curriculum for its students. read more

UVI Welcomes New Professor of Data Science

The University of the Virgin Islands welcomes Dr. Joanne Sylvia Luciano to the University’s College of Science and Mathematics. She will work in the department of Computer and Computational Sciences to develop curriculum in Data Science. This multidisciplinary field blends data inference, algorithm development, and technology in order to solve analytically complex problems. Data science is ultimately about using this data in creative ways to generate business value while being sensitive to and respectful of data privacy, data security, data stewardship and the ethical use of data. The incoming professor has so far proposed two new courses in Health Web Science and will be teaching a special topics course in Data Science this spring read more

The University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Call Center is hosting its 3rd annual Thank-a-Thon from Nov. 21-28. Alumni will be phoned and thanked for their contributions to UVI over the years. The Thank-a-Thon is primarily powered by highly trained UVI students and seeks to show appreciation for the support shown by the alumni and global community. read more

Five University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) students won the 2nd Annual HP HBCU Business Challenge competition on November 12. The national competition was hosted and sponsored by Hewlett Packard (HP), a multinational enterprise information technology company. The competition is designed to inspire future talent, foster emerging careers in technology and increase student business acumen. read more

NOAA Environmental Literacy Program Awards UVI $500,000 in Funds to Advance USVI Community Resilience to Hurricanes

The University of the Virgin Islands has received $500,000 in funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Environmental Literacy Program (ELP) for its U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) Storm Strong Program. The five-year project will create the Territory’s first sustained, community-based, hurricane hazard preparedness program. Through new and strengthened partnerships and the development of a long-term community‐based program, middle- and high school youth and their families across the territory, will engage in on-the-ground projects that increase individual, family, and community preparedness for hurricanes. The program is free and will begin in 2019 on the island of St. Thomas, then expand to St. John and St. Croix. read more
