The University of the Virgin Islands recently bestowed honorary degrees on recording industry artists – Theron Thomas and Timothy Thomas at the 60th Commencement Ceremonies held May 9 on the St. Thomas campus.
Professionally known as “R. City” or “Rock City,” the dynamic sibling duo is widely recognized for their lyrical prowess and prolific songwriting abilities. They have made significant contributions and gained recognition for their songwriting and production skills, leading to collaborations with some of the world’s leading recording artists and crafting hits for the likes of Rihanna and Beyoncé.
Their 2015 debut album, “What Dreams Are Made Of,” with platinum single “Locked Away” featuring Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, threw them into the spotlight. In 2022, Theron earned seven Grammy nominations, including Best Melodic Rap Performance for Latto’s hit record “Big Energy.” At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, held in Los Angeles in February 2024, Theron was crowned Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical, for his work with various artists including Lizzo, Tyla, and Chris Brown.
During the commencement ceremony, the brothers were presented with honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees, recognizing their professional achievements and contributions to the music industry. In a remarkable and heartfelt gesture, Timothy and Theron announced the establishment of the Miguel "Kiebo" Thomas Scholarship Fund, in honor of their late father. The $20,000 scholarship will provide financial assistance to music students who demonstrate a high level of music ability, leadership and strive for excellence in music. This act of philanthropy not only honors their father's legacy but also empowers future generations of musicians.
