About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
The Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences has active programs in Chemistry, Physics, and Process Technology. Our faculty spans professors specializing in chemistry, physics, engineering, and astronomy. A small department, we work collaboratively to make each of our programs apply the rigor of each area to help students reach their potential no matter their choice of major.
The Chemistry Program offers both BA and BS degrees on the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas with a rigorous curriculum that well prepare students for graduate school or professional school. Chemistry majors can take their first two years on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Graduates from the Chemistry Program over the past ten years have > 70% acceptance into graduate or professional schools. Many have gone on to Medical Fields (research or practice), Pharmacy, or Cosmetic Sciences.
The Physics Program was founded five years ago. Students can earn a BS in Physics with a concentration in Astronomy or Engineering. Students can also elect to complete an Associates of Science in Physics. The AS in Physics is offered on the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas and offers students the chance to tailor their curriculum. The physics faculty are integrated strongly into the 3-2 Engineering Program, and many students find that the AS in Physics is an excellent complement to a Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, or Computer Science.
The AAS in Process Technology is offered on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and offers students the chance to work closely with the industrial companies that are the largest employers on St. Croix. Developed in partnership with large employers, the program focuses on skills students will need to be immediately employable.
