About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
On behalf of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Staff Council and Senate,
I wish to extend congratulations to all on reaching this important service milestone
with the University of the Virgin Islands. Your loyalty, professionalism and commitment
to the success of UVI did not go unnoticed.
Again, thank you for your hard work and much dedication and look forward to your ongoing
contributions and a bright and successful future with the University. To the retirees,
may your former hurried pace be replaced with leisure, long visits with family and
pleasure in life's small joys!

Dr. Simon B. Jones-Hendrickson:
Congratulations Dr. Tyson on your retirement!
Your outstanding career at UVI is impressive. Your dedication to providing a wide array of excellent opportunities for the students has always been a great example of your dedication and commitment. You took advantage of every resource available to you to make the students education more meaningful and productive. I have always appreciated your strong support of the Agricultural Experiment Station and our role in mentoring students. You have been a true champion of the students and sought out ways to assist them that are invaluable. You will be missed at UVI but you have also earned your retirement and the chance to have some new adventures with your family.
Wishing you all the best,
Bob Godfrey, Director & Professor
Simon B. Jones-Hendrickson, PhD
Congrats to my loving father. He has been my teacher for 30 years in economics, relationships, love, family and giving back. Thank you for being in my life and thank you for loving me.
Marcus
Simon B. Jones-Hendrickson, PhD
My husband loves the phrase – “We are not creatures of circumstance; we are creators of circumstance.” -Benjamin Disraeli. I do not know if it is because he shares the same name as Mr. Disraeli and/or because his life confirms its truism. But equally, I would add another phrase from a person not as well known- “Actions are the seed of fate; deeds grow into destiny.” -Jean Nidetch. Simon Benjamin Jones-Hendrickson’s actions over his 38 years, yes 38 years, for he came back to UVI as a professor 38 years ago, the year we were married, are the seeds that have been planted in so many students and faculty lives that he has touched. I say came back, because the College of the Virgin Islands was his alma mater, his beginning, his preparation starting in 1965. The philosophy that our family practices states that in the face of hardship “the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat” (WND-1,637). Simon used hardship as an opportunity to develop himself. He weathered and triumphed over all manner of tempests. He used his trials and challenges to develop into the kind of teacher that could instruct students to never be afraid of storms or tribulation but apply yourself. Yet, he never forgot his humble beginnings or the teachers and friends on whose shoulders he stood. He mentored all with the same veracity and clarity that exemplified his life. I could imagine him saying, “You must not take the course of the foolish to think that an education comes easily. But if you apply yourself, you will gain ten times the benefit that you anticipated. The outcome will be truly astonishing.” And although this may apply to you as students, it equally applies to a marriage- An awesome teacher/husband is hard to find, difficult to path with and impossible to forget. I treasure Simon for all that he is and continues to be for he is truly a gift. But if he were to speak about himself, he might agree with Maya Angelou who he had the distinct pleasure to introduce at the Caribbean Studies Association meeting in Jamaica:
My life has been one great big joke,
A dance that's walked
A song that's spoke,
I laugh so hard I almost choke
When I think about myself.
— Maya Angelou
I love you,
Cora

TRIBUTE TO DR. SIMON JONES-HENDRICKSON
I am thrilled to provide this tribute to Dr. Simon Jones-Hendrickson, a brother of distinction who “rubs shoulders with dignitaries and genuinely and fully relates to the common man.”
There are many words and phrases that cloud my mind as I reflect on this distinguished Professor and Dean. He is an intellectual icon, learned, published, prolific writer and eloquent speaker; kind, thoughtful, philanthropic, humble and pedantic.
This student beloved UVI professor meteorically rose through the ranks of academia to the position of Dean and at each level, he served with pride and distinction for over one third of a century.
He is deserving of our profound respect and commendation for the many contributions he has made to our University, our Community and the Caribbean.
Congratulations Brother!!!

Donna Gonzalez,
Donna has been a stalwart member of the AES Aquaculture Program, Farm Store team and now the joint Horticulture and Aquaculture Program for more years than this reward recognizes. Donna began at UVI as a temporary worker processing fish as production increased at the aquaponic facilities. Now, she brings dedication to her work, and focus on the tasks that make her highly valued as a co-worker and friend. She is personally interested in healthy food and brings her passion to work each day to produce consistent high quality results.
Many people on campus and all over St. Croix know Donna from her work at the Farm Store. Her tasks were to fillet or clean fish and prepare attractive produce displays but she is mainly remembered for her WOW service before there was a WOW. Though the Farm Store is closed she continues to be recognized around the island and continues to present a positive face to UVI.
Personal and professional lives overlap when working together for many years. We have shared laughs and tears, and I appreciate her support through hard times. Donna, I wish you many more years of health and happiness.
Donald Bailey
Luis Carino, Jr.,
Frankie Carino WOWs me every day. He is upfront and honest, a hard worker and dependable to the end. I feel confident that he will progress through his daily work tasks without close supervision and he will be ready to take on new assignments when asked. I also like knowing that I can leave a hose running and he will turn it off when I forget by the end of the day.
Being a co-worker is much more than just knowing that they are getting the work done. It's about having a relationship of respect and support for each other's vision of the future. I hope for many more years of being side by side with Frankie as he works towards his goals of a healthy and happy life.

To Dr. Henry Smith,
…..If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"…
“If” by Rudyard Kipling
Words cannot express all our thoughts and feelings better than this poem by Rudyard Kipling. As former V.P. of Research and Public Service, WRRI Director and lastly, Director of the EPSCoR program, you successfully managed these programs and invited the University and the V.I. community to learn, contribute and become an integral part of these programs. Congratulations on your retirement after 25 years of service to the University of the Virgin Islands. You will be missed.

Dear Dr. Jones-Hendrickson:
Congratulations on this your special Service Awards Day at UVI. Of course, you are listed in this booklet as being retired; however, we know differently – Yes, you have retired from UVI, but because of your experience, expertise and foresight in the field of Economics, you have been selected for a very astute position, i.e. to re-tire (reform) the VI economy!
For thirty-eight (38) years, you have proudly, freely, and happily served the University of the Virgin Islands in various capacities, with your last position being at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS), where you served as the Dean; and did so, with class! Your door and your ear, were always open to anyone who needed to speak with you; and you always gave them your undivided attention. All facets of your faculty and staff’s well-being were of utmost importance to you, and you always encouraged us to improve and take care of ourselves. Whatever problems were brought to you, were solved or resolved in the best possible manner.
I had the distinct pleasure of working as your Administrative Assistant during my last two years at UVI. During this time, I saw first-hand, the passion and devotion you have for all that you do; your admirable interaction with students – always willing to help, advise, encourage, and mentor – oftentimes this was just what the students needed to give them that much-needed nudge to focus, stay on the path, and finish what they started. It did not matter the time of day, nor the venue – if someone needed to speak with you, your attention was given to them. Your easy and approachable demeanor, kind words and sense of humor, are the vital spices which draw people to you for assistance. In the words of Napoléon Bonaparte, “A leader is a dealer in hope,” and therefore, you have honorably earned the Great Leader Badge.
You will be missed at UVI, but I am thankful for the opportunity to continue working with you, until you are really ready for retirement!
Dian Gréaux-Levons
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!
Congratulations to Dr Simon Jones-Hendrickson for his sterling contribution in the fields of academia and economic development at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). You have made an impact, not only at the University of the Virgin Islands, but throughout the entire Eastern Caribbean and the world in general by enriching the minds and lives of all those students whom you have mentored over the last 38 years, and sharing your knowledge through the numerous books you have published. We admire you for your sterling qualities of commitment, dedication, exemplary reputation, selfless service and charitable giving of your time and resources. We are happy to see the UVI rise to acknowledge and show appreciation for your tremendous contribution over the last 38 years. Congratulations on a well-deserved honor. God bless you always.
From: Victor & Sheila Williams, St. Kitts
To my father- Simon B. Jones-Hendrickson:
To begin this tribute for my fathers's thirty-eight years of dedicated service. I must clarify what I mean by the word Father.
I had a true father. He worked together with my Mother, his wife of thirty-eight years to nurture my brother and me into the adults we have become.
My father is kind, clever, funny and fun. My Dad is noble and smart. He has a way with words which has been clearly manifested in his over 15 books of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
He made sure that I knew that I was loved and worthy of being loved. Just this act alone gave me a foundation for self-worth that many of my friends never had because they didn't have my father. It is one thing to procreate. But when you invest, and that's exactly what it is an investment in your children and your marriage, you produce dividends that ripple outside of the family unit. I remember when I graduated from college, I was proud that I had accomplished that educational step. But it was much more important to see how my father was beaming! Having been the first person to graduated from college in his family, that moment was much more significant.
For that moment and countless others I say a Thank you.
Thank you for being a man.
A man I could be proud of.
Thank you for teaching me it's ok to be smart.
Thank you for showing me it's ok to have pride in your appearance.
Thank you for teaching me pride in my country.
Thank you for loving and respecting my Mom.
Thank you for teaching me it's ok to be me!
But enough about me.
My Dad is my hero because he demonstrates you can get what you desire. With positive thinking, determination and hard work, you can have what you want.
His deep commitment to his family has only made his ability to care for others grow. He is selfless in his contributions to UVI. Whether it was in scholarships or mentoring a student.
His commitment didn't stop him from doing what he loved inside and outside of the classroom.
Not a day passes that I don't come in contact with someone that my Dad touched with his teaching, lecturing or mentoring. I can't think of a person that has done more for the University of the Virgin Islands.
And with that, I say Thank you.
Nesha Christian-Hendrickson
Ms. Friday,
It is such a pleasure working with you. Your fun spirit, passion for your work and interest in your students, in and out of the Residence Halls, speak volumes of the care and love you have for our students. May Blessings continue to flow on you as you.

Dear President David Hall,
Congratulations for completing 5 years successfully at UVI. It’s been wonderful working with you and your leadership and commitment to the transformation of the lives of the people of the Virgin Islands are greatly appreciated. You clearly exemplify the quote by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.” (No pun intended.)
May the University continued to be blessed by your dedicated leadership as we continue on the Pathways to Greatness!
Best wishes from Shirley Lake-King and the Administration and Finance Component

For Dr. Henry Smith:
I will always cherish the year you took the staff to VERS for our annual retreat. It was outside of the norm for the staff, however it gave us a great deal of insight into the person that you are. It was a pleasure to work with you. The Institutional Advancement Team wishes you a relaxing and rewarding retirement.
