UVI to Commemorate 60th Anniversary with Yearlong Celebrations
The University of the Virgin Islands is commemorating the 60th anniversary of its Charter beginning in March 2022. This significant milestone marks UVI’s Diamond Jubilee. UVI alumni, staff, faculty, student organizations and clubs are urged to join this yearlong celebration.
“As we mark six decades of growth, excellence and community stewardship, one cannot help but reflect on the journey that the University has been on,” said UVI Public Relations Director Tamika Thomas Williams. “From a single campus with a handful of degree offerings, the University now offers over 70 undergraduate degrees, advance degrees and online programs. Today, UVI is one of the premier Land-Grant HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) in the country.”
The University of the Virgin Islands was chartered on March 16, 1962, as the College of the Virgin Islands — a publicly funded, coeducational, liberal arts institution — by Act No. 852 of the Fourth Legislature of the United States Virgin Islands.
According to that law, UVI's cornerstone objective is to provide for "...the stimulation and utilization of the intellectual resources of the people of the Virgin Islands and the development of a center of higher learning whereby and wherefrom the benefits of culture and education may be extended throughout the Virgin Islands.”
“UVI’s alumni, faculty and staff have witnessed the University fulfill the mission of its charter and the University continues to grow well beyond the Virgin Islands to impact our region and the world, with more than 9,000 alumni taking their places as leaders, decision-makers, educators, healthcare providers and more,” said Thomas Williams.
The University will mark this significant milestone well beyond charter month, with events being planned throughout the year.
The UVI community is urged to plan activities and events around the anniversary and to use the official 60th Anniversary’s logo. The new logo depicts a bold representation of the anniversary year with the figure 60, the operating lifespan of the University and its emblem.
