About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
The University will be hosting its official 62nd Charter Day Ceremony in grand style this Friday, March 15th, at 10:00 a.m. in the LaVerne E. Ragster Administration & Conference Center building on the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas. The event will also be streamed live to the Cafetorium on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and available online on UVI’s Facebook and YouTube pages.
Following the ceremony, there will be a fun social event on both campuses with complimentary refreshments, including ice cream, cupcakes, and music.
This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Dietra Trent, Executive Director for the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). UVI has the distinction of being the only HBCU outside of the mainland US. Dr. Trent's extensive experience in higher education and national focus on advancing opportunities for HBCUs make her a fitting choice for this special occasion.
This year’s program will feature a special musical celebration showcase from our Music Department under the leadership of Mr. Dion Parson. The event will include wonderful music and guests, including trombonist/conch shell player Steve Turre.
We will also have as our special guest WNBA local star, Ms. Aliyah Boston, present.
The diverse lineup of guests and performances promises to make this year's celebration a memorable one for all in attendance.
UVI stakeholders, alumni and friends are invited to attend the festivities.
