UVI Students, Faculty and Staff Invited to Let’s Talk Data Panel Discussion

Learning how to understand and apply data is essential for success in academics, careers, and everyday life. The University of the Virgin Islands community is invited to attend “Let’s Talk Data,” an interactive 45-minute panel discussion designed to show why data matters and how it can be used effectively.

This month’s program will feature Hunter Simpson, an 18-year-old UVI Communication major and rising Virgin Islands artist and sports journalist for “Sports Illustrated”. Hunter has covered major leagues like the NBA and NFL. Hunter has quickly made a name for himself in the music world, blending Caribbean rhythms with modern storytelling while leveraging social media platforms like TikTok to expand his reach. He will share how students can use data strategically in media and messaging, drawing from his own experience balancing academics, artistry, and online influence.

University faculty and staff experts will also contribute perspectives on forecasting and analysis, the role of census data in shaping policy, data use in archives, and how to evaluate information effectively.

Discussion topics will include:

  • Understanding and forecasting data: analysis, mining, and trends
  • How data influences public policy
  • Why data matters and how to use it effectively
  • Data in practice: extracting and analyzing archives
  • Data in media and messaging from a student perspective
