White House HBCU Scholar Kyra Edwards is proof that reading is the key to success. An avid reader growing up in Dominica, Edwards always found enjoyment in reading fiction, a past time she continues to nurture despite her busy schedule as a college senior majoring in accounting and minoring in communications. In September, Edwards was selected by the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) as an HBCU Scholar for 2024. “The experience was transformative,” she says. “I was able to attend the HBCU Conference in Philadelphia, meet with like-minded students and even take a photo with President Biden.” In May 2025, Edwards will be the first member of her immediate family to graduate from college. She hopes to pursue advanced degrees after gaining work experience in the accounting field.
While at UVI, Edwards has taken advantage of many opportunities to learn and grow. As the immediate past president of the UVI Association of Black Journalists, she has gained practical experience planning and executing the association’s annual summit. As the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Yard Ambassador and Influencer, she informs students at events and through social media about the organization’s scholarship and internship opportunities. “Being a spokesperson for the TMCF has been a great way for me to network with other students and grow my social media presence,” she says. As a student worker in the Center for Student Success on the Albert A. Sheen Campus, Edwards helps the office run smoothly, ensuring scheduling of tutoring sessions and managing marketing materials. She encourages fellow students not to let opportunities pass them by. “Get involved. There are many opportunities out there. Take a moment to read the emails – you never know when it could be an opportunity of a lifetime.”
