Main Research and Teaching Interests
Algebraic topology; Operads and cooperads; Lie coalgebras; Model category theoryBiography
After studying mathematics and statistics at Rice University (coding computers on the weekends), Benjamin Walter changed to pure math for graduate school at Brown University. He completed his PhD in 2005, then taught at Purdue University in Indiana and the Middle East Institute of Technology in Cyprus; with short breaks researching at the Mittag-Leffler Institute in Sweden and Max-Plank, Bonn in Germany. His research is in algebraic topology, with interests in category theory, operads, and rational homotopy theory. His teaching experience extends throughout the pure and applied undergraduate and graduate mathematics curriculum as well as probability and statistics. He avidly follows the development of machine learning and AI, anticipating upcoming changes to the future careers of his students as well as to education itself! After a childhood in an arid Texas ranch, he fell in love with the sea on Cyprus, and is happy to continue island life in USVI!
