The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) mourns the passing of its third president, Dr. Orville E. Kean, who was appointed by the UVI Board of Trustees to serve as President in 1990. He held the position for 12 years until his retirement in 2002. In recognition of his accomplishments, leadership, and impact on the development of the University during his tenure, Dr. Kean was conferred the status of President Emeritus upon his retirement

Members of the media are invited to cover and photograph a signing ceremony commemorating the launch of a partnership agreement between the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) School of Agriculture (SOA) and H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) on Tortola, British Virgin Islands that will establish a combined degree program leading to Bachelor of Science Degrees in Agricultural Business, Agroecology, Animal Science, Aquaponics, and Horticulture.

In its first production of the year, the Reichhold Center for the Arts (RCA) is pleased to present the next event in its RCA Sessions series, a musical concert on Friday, Jan. 31. “Sessions on the Floor” will take place at the Elridge W. Blake Sports and Fitness Center at the University of the Virgin Islands’ (UVI) Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas. Guests will enjoy a cocktail hour at 7 pm including light bites and music by DJ Pete.

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), in collaboration with the Every Page Foundation (EPF), recognized 22 women science leaders as the 2024 NSF-EPF Ocean Decade Champions. Of those 22 women, three are from the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). Dr. Marilyn Brandt, UVI Research Professor of Marine and Environmental Sciences, Dr. Kristin Grimes, UVI Research Associate Professor of Marine and Environmental Sciences, and Allie Durdall, Program Manager of GRROE USVI Mangroves were honored for their research, conservation work, education, and community outreach programs in the areas of coral reef disease, mangrove restoration and coastal resilience.

The Patterson Family Foundation Awards $75,000 to Fund Scholarships for UVI Students

This remarkable contribution will fund 10 scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year, supporting first-year undergraduate and graduate students aspiring to pursue careers in writing or teaching writing.

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) School of Agriculture (SOA) proudly announces that Janice Brooks has become the first student to receive a certificate in horticulture from its academic program. Launched in 2020, the UVI School of Agriculture offers a diverse range of academic opportunities, including five bachelor’s degrees and four associate degrees, along with six certificates in various agricultural disciplines.
UVI’s Eastern Caribbean Center Awarded Two NIH Grants to Address USVI Healthcare Needs

The Eastern Caribbean Center (ECC) at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is thrilled to announce its selection as a recipient of two highly competitive grants from the National Institutes of Health’s Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD) program. These awards, totaling $550,000, will enable the ECC to harness artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to tackle health inequities and improve healthcare service delivery in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI).

University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Athletics leader and alumna Donna Andrews has made basketball history. Last week, Andrews was one of two Virgin Islanders inducted into the Paradise Jam Hall of Fame for her significant contributions to the success of the college basketball tournament, now celebrating its twenty-fifth year in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
