In celebration of its annual Charter Day, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is pleased to announce a series of activities in commemoration of the 61st anniversary of its charter. Events kick off on Friday, March 17, 2023, with a Charter Day Walk/Run on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and conclude with a Charter Day ceremony on Friday, March 24, 2023, featuring VI Senate President Novelle E. Francis, Jr. as the keynote speaker.
“I am truly honored and pleased to welcome Senate President Francis in marking yet another significant year in the University’s history of growth and progress in fulfilling our mission,” said UVI President Dr. David Hall. “Our past is impressive, we are in the midst of a most exciting period of change and transition, and the trajectory for our future is brighter than ever. We owe a debt of great gratitude to our leaders and the countless members of our community who have supported us along the way and are a part of our institutional fabric,” he added.
The Charter Day ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. President Hall, other distinguished guests and members of the UVI community will convene for the traditional event.
The entire community is invited to participate in the 19th annual Charter Day Walk/Run on Friday, March 17, 2023, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus. The one-mile race will begin at 6 a.m. at the campus bookstore, with first place prizes being awarded to the top-placing male and female entrants in the following categories: Overall, UVI Alumni, UVI Students, UVI Staff Members, and UVI Faculty Members.
Registration for the Walk/Run event is $10 and can be paid at the UVI bookstore or the Campus Operations Office on the Sheen Campus. Pre-registration is open until March 16, 2023, at 4 p.m. Commemorative t-shirts will be on sale for $10 on the day of the event, and a light breakfast will be provided at the end of the event. Additional Charter Day activities planned for 2023 include the annual Charter Day Concert on Saturday, March 18, at 7 p.m. at the Prior Jollek Hall at Antilles School. Hosted by the UVI College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Communication and Performing Arts Department, the concert will feature Artist-in-Residence Dr. Darrly Jordan, Gospel Artist and Choir Director at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art & Performing Arts in New York City. The evening’s performers also include the UVI Jazz Combo directed by Dion Parson, the UVI Concert Choir directed by Jeannette Rhymer, the UVI Steel Pan Ensemble directed by LeRoi Simmonds, and special guest Sherwin Williams. Also planned is UVI’s Annual “friendraiser,” Afternoon on the Green on Sunday, March 19, from noon to 5 p.m. on the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on St. Thomas. UVI was chartered on March 16, 1962, as the College of the Virgin Islands — a publicly funded, coeducational, liberal arts institution — by Act No. 852 of the Fourth Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands. According to that law, UVI’s cornerstone objective is to provide for “…the stimulation and utilization of the intellectual resources of the people of the Virgin Islands and the development of a center of higher learning whereby and wherefrom the benefits of culture and education may be extended throughout the Virgin Islands.”
