About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
Members of the media are invited to cover and photograph the University of the Virgin Islands’ Culinary Arts Fundamental Cooks Beginner Certification Program’s Closing Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 22, in the UVI 13D Research and Strategy Innovation Center on the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas.
Housed under UVI’s Center for Excellence in Leadership and Learning (UVICELL), the inaugural Certified Fundamental Cooks beginner program, taught by Chef Kerish Robles, combines hands-on learning and immersive industry experience using a learn-by-doing approach in the program. The on-campus restaurant, the Wild Sage Bistro, was created to give students a chance to gain real-life work experience in the food industry. Students enrolled in the program were introduced to culinary arts and were able to gain experience while working in the on-campus restaurant as cashiers, dishwashers, servers, and line cooks. The program provides the instruction, guidance and experience needed to work in a food service setting.
Twelve students completed the six-month program to become American Culinary Federation certified (ACF) and gained their food Handler’s Certificate from the National Restaurant Association.
Please RSVP by noon on Friday, May 19, via email at pr@uvi.edu or calling (340) 693-1059.
