About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) joins the Virgin Islands community in mourning the loss of
former Senator Alicia “Chucky” Hansen, an incredibly formidable and influential political figure who made her mark as an 11-term senator in the district of St. Croix.
“On behalf of the University of the Virgin Islands, I extend my sincere sympathies to UVI alumna Elizabeth Hansen Watley and to the entire family of Senator Hansen,” said UVI President David Hall. “Senator Hansen was a strong advocate for UVI and had especially fond memories of her support of the Nursing program during its early stages. Senator Hansen dedicated her career to public service and to being a powerful voice and advocate for her constituents. Whatever the cause, she fought for it with unwavering determination and passion. In this time of loss, let us celebrate Senator Hansen’s exuberant spirit and the significant contributions she made to the Virgin Islands and its people.”
