About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Freshman guard Ashukamayah Phillips earned
the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week title. This award is only
available to freshmen and transfer students who are new to the conference. Phillips
was selected out of a pool of nominees as the winner of this award by the conference
voting committee on Monday afternoon.
The reigning newcomer of the week scored a career-high 31 points against Tougaloo
College in a dominant win during the conference matchup. Phillips shot 11-22 from
the field and 7-of-13 from three-point territory.
The 5-foot-7 guard has started all 19 of UVI’s games this year and leads the lady Buccaneers offensively scoring 13.6 points per game making her the 4th leading scorer in the conference. She also averages 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.
Phillips is just the second UVI player to win the Newcomer of the Week award after junior guard Jordan Carter secured it earlier this season.
