In celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Brown versus Board of Education, the landmark U.S. Superior Court decision that made racial segregation illegal in public schools, the University of the Virgin Islands' College of Liberal Arts and Social Science (UVI CLASS,) will host a Fireside Chat to discuss this ruling on Wednesday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Evans Center Suite 401 (EVC401- Little Theatre) on UVI’s Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.  

“UVI CLASS, in partnership with the U.S. District Court of the Virgin Islands and the UVI School of Education, is honored to host this important event that provides an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Brown versus Board of Education and its enduring relevance in today's society,” said Dr. Kimarie Engerman, CLASS dean. “It is our hope that through open dialogue and critical examination, this Fireside Chat in observance of the 70th Anniversary of this historic case in U.S. history will foster a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding educational equality and inspire meaningful action towards a more just and inclusive future.”  

The Fireside Chat will feature distinguished speakers and scholars who will delve into the legal, social, and educational implications of the Brown versus Board of Education ruling, including panelists: 

  • U.S. Magistrate Judge Ruth Miller, District Court of the Virgin Islands  
  • Chief Disciplinary Counsel Tanisha Bailey-Roka, Esq., Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands 
  • Librarian Aesha Duval, District Court of the Virgin Islands  

U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Emile Henderson, III will be the moderator. Remarks will be shared by Dr. Engerman and Dr. Karen Brown, dean of the School of Education.  

The University of the Virgin Islands invites students, faculty, staff, and members of the wider community to engage in a thought-provoking discussion exploring the historical significance and ongoing impact of this pivotal landmark Supreme Court decision. Admission is free.
