In preparation for the approach of Tropical Storm Ernesto, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will close both of its campuses today at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 13. Tropical Storm Ernesto is projected to pass near or over the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this evening.   

Non-essential employees are asked to secure their workstations before leaving for the day to allow UVI’s Essential Employees in Physical Plant and our Security Offices to properly complete all campus preparations for the storm, including closing shutters and placing sandbags by door thresholds. Employees on campus should remove items from windows or the floor before leaving campus.  Information on steps to prepare for inclement weather can be found on UVI’s Emergency Preparedness Plan pages 39 through 43.  

Non-essential UVI employees are expected to report to work at 10 a.m on Wednesday, Aug. 14, while essential employees are asked to report to work for their regularly scheduled hours.  

St. Thomas Campus: 
The Office of Residence Life and Student Housing is working to check-in new and transfer students who travelled to St. Thomas and wish to check-in. Students are also welcome to stay in hotels with their parents, if they prefer. Students residing on St. Thomas, St. John and those traveling to St. Thomas from St. Croix are asked to remain at home until the storm passes and to monitor UVI communications for further updates. Check-in is anticipated to resume on Friday, Aug. 16, pending an assessment of the campus, and will continue until all students have been checked in. Students requiring accommodations due to special circumstances should contact the Office of Residence Life and Student Housing on St. Thomas at (340) 693-1110 or via email at shousing@uvi.edu. 

Orientation on St. Thomas has been rescheduled to Aug. 16, as well. Welcome week now will occur beginning Monday, Aug. 19. For more details visit https://orientation.uvi.edu.  

St. Croix Campus:  
Residence Hall Move-in Day on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will occur as planned on Friday, Aug. 16, from 8:30 a.m. to noon for new students, and returning students will be on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information contact Dr. Colvin T.
