About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) in partnership with 13D Research & Strategy recently launched a unique opportunity for students and members of the Virgin Islands community to receive financial support for starting or growing their businesses. By providing direct financial assistance, the 13D Milestone Funding Initiative will empower selected applicants to achieve key milestones in their entrepreneurial journey.
The 13D Milestone Funding Initiative offers:
The initiative provides essential financial backing to both students and community entrepreneurs either launching a new business or seeking to grow an existing venture, allowing them to accelerate their entrepreneurial endeavors and contributing to their success in the Virgin Islands’ dynamic business landscape.
Entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply to secure funding that will enable them to reach significant business milestones such as introducing new products or expanding services.
“This program represents a groundbreaking approach to nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship in the Virgin Islands,” said Dr. Nelson Pizarro, Kirl Sokoloff Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Special Assistant to the President at UVI. “By focusing on tangible milestones rather than competition, we aim to directly support the business community, ensuring that our entrepreneurs have the resources they need to succeed.”
Unlike traditional business competitions, the 13D Milestone Funding Initiative does not involve competing against other entrepreneurs. Instead, participants will pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges who will determine if their proposed milestones warrant funding. The judges may approve or deny funding based on the perceived viability of the project and its potential for success.
UVI is hosting an online workshop on Oct. 23, 2024, at 6 p.m. for those interested in applying. The workshop will offer insights into the application process and how to successfully pitch a business idea to the funding panel. For workshop information, contact nelson.pizarro@uvi.edu.
The first submission is due on Nov. 18 by 6 pm. If applicants are selected to present, they will be notified by Nov. 20. Presentations will take place on Nov. 22 at 2 pm at the 13D Research and Strategy Innovation Center on the Orville E. Kean Campus, St. Thomas. Applicants will present their proposals to the selection panel at this time. Applicants must submit initial materials via email to Dr. Pizarro at nelson.pizarro@uvi.edu by the Nov. 18 deadline.
The 13D Milestone Funding Initiative is sponsored by 13D Research & Strategy, a long-time philanthropic supporter of UVI. 13D Research & Strategy is a global research firm based in St. Thomas and the namesake of UVI’s 13D Research and Strategy Innovation Center, which serves as a hub for students, entrepreneurs, startups, and businesses to turn their innovative ideas into reality.
UVI’s School of Business offers a Certificate in Entrepreneurship, a program meticulously designed to guide participants through the crucial stages of the startup cycle. The curriculum is structured to ensure that participants acquire a robust entrepreneurial mindset and practical skills through a sequence of three progressive courses. Students can also minor in Entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial skills are not only vital for starting a business but are increasingly sought after across various industries.
