About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) mourns the passing of Kareem L. Pinney, 17, who was tragically killed on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, in the early morning hours. Pinney was a freshman residing on campus enrolled in classes that would have led to a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics from the College of Science and Mathematics. Pinney was mortally wounded when gunshots were fired near his family home at Grandview Apartments Housing Community.
“My heart and prayers go out to Kareem’s family and friends. This is a tragedy of epic proportions. The quick and violent end of anyone is senseless and horrible, but the loss of someone so young tears the soul apart,” said UVI President Dr. Safiya George. “I offer condolences also to the UVI community. A member of our University family has been taken, and I join you in mourning his passing. Know that the University community is here to support you during this difficulty time.”
President George said that the University’s Office of Counseling and Placement is available in the Student Affairs Building (Rouppe House) for those needing assistance processing this loss. Dahlia Stridiron is the Director of Counseling Services at St. Thomas and can be reached at (340) 693-1136 or dstridi@uvi.edu.
Additionally, Patricia Towal, director of Counseling and Career Services, will lead virtual sessions for those who may prefer to meet online. For more information, contact Towal via Microsoft Teams or ptowal@uvi.edu.
On Tuesday, Nov. 5, a memorial space for reflection will be set up for students in the East Residence Hall to share their thoughts and feelings, and a vigil is being planned.
The University will continue to share information in the days ahead on our website (https://uvi.edu.com) and social media pages - ( https://www.instagram.com/uvi_edu/ and https://www.facebook.com/UVI.edu).
