The University Virgin Islands Medical Simulation Center (UVI MSC), in partnership with the Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) and the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD), is conducting a Mass Casualty Exercise at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

Held as part of National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week 2024, the Mass Casualty Exercise will simulate an active shooter scenario that will include realistic sounds, simulated patients, special effects moulage makeup, as well as coordinated VIPD and FEMS response. Simulated gun shots will begin the drill at 2:30 pm. VIPD will simulate an armed assailant on campus creating simulated casualties and the need for activation of the EMS chain of survival. Response entities will be working in concert to ensure public safety.

“This exercise is aimed at improving active shooter scenario preparedness for VI FEMS, students and staff on the UVI’s Sheen Campus, and the whole community,” said Charlene Navarro RN, executive director of the Medical Simulation Center. “We are pleased that the center is coordinating this type of exercise in collaboration with FEMS, VIPD, the VI Department of Health and UVI’s Campus Security. This is exactly the type of training and active learning that the UVI MSC was created to facilitate along with so much more.”

The Mass Casualty Exercise will demonstrate correct procedures for neutralizing an armed assailant and treating injured victims. The Department of Health and UVI’s Counseling Services will be onsite to provide mental health services during the exercise. The public is invited to observe the event from designated areas. The exercise will be videotaped for training purposes. For safety, please follow the commands of uniformed personnel.
