About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
The Queen's Committee of the University of the Virgin Islands’ Student Government Association is proud to present the 44th Annual Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition on Saturday, April 6, at 6 p.m. in the Cafetorium on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. This year, two students will vie for the title of Miss UVI 2024.
LaMonee Morris, a 21-year-old junior majoring in psychology, with a minor in dance, is contestant number one. Morris is a culture bearer who takes pride in being a Mocko Jumbie and aims to preserve Virgin Islands culture through HBCU Pride. Morris, who attends UVI on the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas, is the captain of UVI’s Twirlettes.
MiLisa Mercado, a 20-year-old sophomore majoring in nursing, is contestant number two. Mercado, who attends UVI on the Sheen Campus, is passionate about promoting water accessibility and sustainability through education.
“Both contestants embody the qualities of poise, elegance, and intellect that the Miss UVI title represents,” said UVI Director of Student Life and Activities, Jana Austrie. “This year's theme, 'I Am HBCU Excellence,’ celebrates the rich heritage and achievements of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” Austrie continued, “We invite the public to come out and enjoy this year’s competition as the University showcases the talents of two of our awesome student ambassadors.”
As the goodwill ambassador for the University, Miss UVI plays a vital role in recruitment efforts, representing the University locally and internationally, and maintaining a prominent presence on both campuses. The contestants will be evaluated on their intellect, language usage, fluency, deportment, auditability, and content. The winner will be awarded a full academic year of UVI tuition, including room and board, along with other exciting prizes. Additionally, awards will be presented for the Most Intellectual Speaker, Best Ambassadorial Presentation, Best Performing Talent, and Best Evening Wear.
Tickets for the event are $15 for UVI students with valid identification and $20 for the community. They can be purchased at the Student Center and Bookstore on the Albert A. Sheen Campus, St. Croix.
