The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) proudly presents the annual “friend-raiser”, Afternoon on the Green (AOTG), an exciting family-friendly event that brings together the rich cultural heritage, vibrant music, and delectable flavors of the Virgin Islands. This year’s celebration takes place on Sunday, March 16, 2025, from noon to 5 p.m. on the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the Orville E. Kean Campus, St. Thomas. With the theme “Keeping VI Culture & Cuisine Alive at AOTG 2025”, the event takes on special significance as UVI celebrates the Inauguration of its sixth president, Dr. Safiya George, a UVI alum and Virgin Islander.
“Afternoon on the Green is the ultimate showcase of Virgin Islands culture and UVI is proud to play a role in helping to preserve our cultural legacy,” said Dr. Kyza A. Callwood, UVI Board of Trustees member and Afternoon on the Green Planning Committee Chair. “We come together this year to celebrate UVI’s new president and, as always, to support our students’ dreams of going to college.”
This year’s entertainment lineup features energetic performances by Klimaxx Band and the United Jazz Foundation, a fusion of smooth jazz and island rhythms. Also coming to the stage are Broheem with Love, UVI’s Buccaneer Twirlettes and a Soca Aerobics fitness session to get everyone moving. In between performances, attendees can dance and sing along to the sounds of DJ Nut. Children and adults alike will enjoy an array of interactive activities, including face painting, games, bounce houses and engaging displays presented by UVI’s schools and colleges.
Foodies will enjoy a diverse selection of mouthwatering Caribbean dishes and handcrafted local beverages. From pick-up saltfish to Vienna cake, every bite tells a story of tradition and flavor as volunteer cooks present their best dishes for the taste-testing competition. Each taste is $4 with proceeds from the event benefiting the Edward Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Fund, providing crucial financial support for Virgin Islands students pursuing higher education at UVI.
Afternoon on the Green thrives on community participation. Cooks, volunteers, and sponsors are all invited to contribute by registering at aog.uvi.edu. This year’s generous sponsors include Viya, Cost U Less, WTJX, First Bank, P3, the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, the VI Board of Education, Tradewinds Chiropractic, the Virgin Islands National Guard, VI Council on the Arts, Indelible, Healthcare & Emergency Solutions, VI Department of Health Division of Maternal & Child Health, Tropical Shipping, Fabien’s Trucking, Bellows International, West Indies Company, and the VI Waste Management Authority.
