The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will convene a special meeting virtually on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. to consider several time-sensitive matters related to the University’s accreditation, finances, policies and Board governance.
A significant portion of the meeting will focus on the University’s response to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Show Cause action. The Board is scheduled to receive an update and review the final MSCHE Show Cause report and the required contingency Teach-Out Plan, the status of the FY2022-FY2025 audits, a 10-year financial planning model, and allotment and legislative developments.
Board of Trustees Chairman Henry C. Smock acknowledged the short notice provided to the University community and the public regarding the special meeting.
“We recognize that this meeting is being announced with very little advance notice, and on behalf of the Board, I apologize to the University community and members of the public for the late announcement,” Smock said. “The Board is addressing several important and time-sensitive matters, particularly those connected to the University’s accreditation response and governance responsibilities. Given the urgency of this work, we determined that it was important to convene the Board at this time. We remain committed to transparency and to keeping the UVI community and the public informed as we carry out our responsibilities.”
UVI remains accredited while it works to address the areas identified by MSCHE.
The Board will also review several University policies, including revised human resources policies, two financial policies and the Board’s policy-making policy. Additional governance matters on the agenda include an Artificial Intelligence Policy; a Disability Student Services Policy; proposed charters for the Board’s Executive, Governance, Audit, and Finance and Budget committees; and a proposed Board Secretary bylaw amendment.
The Board is also scheduled to discuss executive session requirements and procedures before taking up other business and adjournment.
