Animal Science

Program Description

The Animal Science program is focused on improving livestock production in the Caribbean, especially in the United States Virgin Islands, through knowledge and applied research.

The Small Ruminant Facilities represent the leading research center of the Animal Science Program. The facilities comprise 40 acres of pasture, a renovated building equipped for research, and 120-130 animals. The predominant breeds in the facilities are St. Croix White Hair sheep and St. Croix x Dorper crossbreeds. This facility is prepared for environmental stress, nutrition, breeding and genetics, and growth physiology research.

The Animal Science program also includes a small flock of purebred Senepol cattle. The program aims to preserve the breed and animal health of cattle.
