Professional Spanish Certificate

 

The Professional Spanish Certificate is designed for students who wish to work in the medical field, law enforcement, first responders, hospitality, and other businesses. The Professional Spanish Certificate will prepare students in acquiring the necessary language and intercultural skills needed to communicate with French or Spanish speaking populations. Speaking a second language can give professionals an edge when applying for a job in this ever more interconnected society, and a better appreciation of different cultures.

Minor in Spanish

Students pursuing any major may choose to pursue a minor in Spanish. The main goal of this minor is to increase students’ contact with Spanish thereby increasing their command of the language. Although it is not required, a study abroad experience in a Spanish speaking country is highly recommended.  In addition to completing SPA 131, SPA 132 and SPA 231, students must complete (with a grade of C or higher) 18 credits in Spanish at the 300 level or above.

The following list represents some of the careers that held by professionals with minors in Spanish:

  • Teaching: Elementary and secondary schools, in conjunction with appropriate teacher certification
  • Business: international relations consultant, international banker, foreign exchange, foreign correspondent, translator/interpreter, bilingual customer support, advertising, marketing and consumer research, insurance, real estate, personnel work or sales
  • Government Services: federal, state, and local government jobs in such areas as national security agent, immigration officer, translator/interpreter, cultural attaché, foreign diplomat, foreign service officer, publishing specialist, foreign correspondent, journalism and public relations
  • Social Services: case management, group work with youth or the elderly, recreation, or administration

Upon successful completion of the program, students minoring in Spanish will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of Spanish
  • Demonstrate basic reading, writing and listening proficiency in Spanish
  • Demonstrate basic speaking and conversational proficiency in Spanish
  • Demonstrate competency in Spanish literature and Hispanic culture
