About
Founded in 1962, UVI is a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU in the United States Virgin Islands.
The University of the Virgin Islands "Colloquium and Working Paper Series" is designed to inspire intellectual discussion and promote scholarly research and publication across various disciplines, as well as encourage networking among individuals in their respective fields. Ultimately, this endeavor should contribute to scholarly professional development.
All UVI academics, researchers, as well as administrators and graduate students can submit research proposals or full research papers for presentation at the colloquium. As this is an interdisciplinary colloquium, papers can be submitted in any discipline including: business, education, liberal arts and social sciences, science and mathematics, nursing, etc.
Each colloquium session will be an avenue that provides an opportunity for participants to share their research proposals or full research papers and obtain constructive feedback that can be used to revise their proposals or papers. Authors who present full research papers at Colloquium sessions are invited to revise them accordingly and submit them to the Chair of the UVI Colloquium and Working Paper Series to be peer reviewed for possible publication in the UVI Working Paper Series.
Participation in the Colloquium entails presenting research proposals and/or full papers, (with the option to submit a revised full paper for publication in the Working Paper Series), and attending the presentation of papers during the bi-monthly one hour sessions starting on November 30th 2011. If necessary, the bi-monthly sessions can be changed to monthly sessions in the future to accommodate participants and the university.
A Colloquium session will comprise about 2 - 3 research papers or research proposals at a predetermined venue on each campus through video conferencing. Presentations should take no longer than 15-20 minutes followed by discussion. Research papers can be pure/basic research or applied research (in terms of case studies, surveys, experiments, etc.) from any discipline.
The proposal or full paper, including a 100 word abstract, must be submitted by the author(s) to the Chair of the UVI Colloquium and Working Paper Series at least one week prior to the presentation. The abstract will then be forwarded to all UVI faculty members prior to the presentation. The abstract and research proposal/ paper must conform to the format of the Harvard style of writing or to the style of the American Psychological Association or follow any other acceptable referencing style in the discipline. Manuscripts should be single spaced with 12pt Times New Roman font and 1 inch margins on all four sides.
Authors who present full research papers at Colloquium sessions are invited to revise them accordingly and submit them to the Chair of the UVI Colloquium and Working Paper Series to be peer reviewed for possible publication in the UVI Working Paper Series.
Manuscripts should be single spaced with 12pt Times New Roman font and 1 inch margins on all four sides. Each full paper must include: Abstract; Introduction (including the rationale and objective of the study); Literature Review; Methodology; Data Analysis and Findings; Conclusion; and References. The paper must conform to the format of the Harvard style of writing or to the style of the American Psychological Association or follow any other acceptable referencing style in the discipline. Only papers that are accepted after going through the peer review process will be published in the UVI Working Paper Series.
Papers published in the UVI Working Paper Series will be posted on the UVI website as an open access, peer reviewed scholarly publication. However, presenting a paper at a Colloquium and/or submitting a paper to the Working Paper Series does not preclude authors from publishing their papers in academic journals, conference proceedings or other publications but they must acknowledge that the paper was first published as part of the UVI Working Paper Series.
The Working Paper Series will have an Editorial Advisory Board drawn from UVI Schools, Colleges, Research and Public Service, and if possible, one or two external members. For future planning, it is hoped that the activities generated through this Faculty Research Colloquium and Working Paper Series will eventually pave the way for organizing an interdisciplinary refereed research conference at the US University of the Virgin Islands and justify the need for establishing a university based interdisciplinary refereed journal.
Manuscripts in the form of research proposals or full research papers should be submitted electronically to: Dr Gabriel Ogunmokun , Chair - UVI Colloquium and Working Paper Series. Email: gogunmo@uvi.edu
