Pre-Health Profession Advising - Path to Medical School
So you've done a lot of thinking and research which has lead you to the decision
to pursue a career as a physician. Before entering medical school, you need to earn
a Bachelor's degree. While you don't have to major in science to be accepted to medical
school, a science major will prepare you best for the medical school curriculum. In
the Division of Science and Mathematics at the University of the Virgin Islands, Bachelor
of Science majors in Biology and Chemistry prepare students extremely well for a medical
career. The most important thing you can do is learn to study well and earn excellent
grades. Here is a rough guideline for how to prepare for your medical career while earning your Bachelor's degree.
The University of the Virgin Islands is one of only 14 undergraduate colleges to be affiliated with the Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine Early Medical School Selection Program (EMSSP). Students apply for admission to this program during their sophomore year at UVI. Once accepted, students spend the summers after their sophomore and junior years at Boston University. They also spend their senior year at Boston University, completing their degree requirements and taking medical school courses. In this way, students earn double credit for BA/BS and MD degrees as a college senior. Students graduate from UVI and then enter the EMSSP. This program at UVI is a wonderful opportunity for UVI students who want to attend a first-class medical school and become a physician.
