The Center for Marine and Environmental Studies houses faculty, staff, and researchers
that study a diversity of topics related to marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Academic
programs supported by the MacLean Marine Science Center include Undergraduate programs
in Biology and Marine Biology, and a Graduate program in Marine and Environmental
Science, as well as community outreach education. For more information on academic
programs, see the UVI Catalog.
Bachelor in Marine Biology: UVI offers both B.A. and B.S. degrees in Marine Biology, preparing students for postgraduate and professional careers with an emphasis on
student participation in scientific research. Emerging Caribbean Scientist Programs offer scholarships, research experiences, mentoring, and supplemental instruction
to St. Thomas and St. Croix students participating in UVI STEM (science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics) and psychology courses.
Master of Marine and Environmental Science: The MMES program is an advanced degree program designed to prepare professionals
for careers in marine and environmental science and natural resource management.
A unifying theme of the program is to understand tropical ecosystems by studying land-sea
relationships, and applying this understanding to environmental management. There
are two tracks of study in the MMES program: a science based track for those students
who wish to focus on research, and a management based track for those students who
wish to focus on resource management issues. The program draws upon the expertise
of faculty within several units of UVI, in particular the Center for Marine and Environmental Studies and the Division of Science and Mathematics. For more information on the program and how to apply, visit the MMES website or contact the MMES Graduate Program Coordinator at 340-693-1427 or mmes@uvi.edu
Diving Program SCUBA diving is used in education and research at UVI which has been recently certified
by American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS). Students can earn PADI certifications in Open Water Diving and Research
diving by enrolling in MSC 111 (Scientific Diving) and MSC 211 (Research diving).
Many undergraduate and graduate courses include opportunities for students who are
certified divers to do independent research and environmental assessments on SCUBA.
Visiting researchers who are approved to dive at UVI can pay for SCUBA airfills and boat use. For more information on diving, contact Mr. Steve Prosterman , (Dive Safety Officer), at sproste@uvi.edu or (340) 693-1399.
