The Eastern Caribbean Center of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will conduct the 2023 Virgin Islands Community Survey (VICS) during the months of August and September 2023. This scientific survey of a sample of households is a follow-up to the one conducted in 2018. The information collected is similar to that gathered in the Population and Housing Census of 2020.

The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) has announced the distinguished scholars selected for its 2023 cohort, which includes two individuals representing the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). Recent graduate Michael Bell and senior Jackeima Flemming are among those chosen to participate in the program, which boasts an HBCU participation rate of more than 70 percent.

Dr. Karen M. Carty has been named the Director of Athletics at the University of the Virgin Islands. Dr. Carty becomes the first female athletics director in UVI’s 61-year history.

A newly published study from scientists at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) and The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) examines how different coral species respond to a devastating disease and which species are more vulnerable. The project examines the effects of stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), which first appeared in 2014 in the waters around Florida and began spreading to the Caribbean in 2018-19.

In the regular session of its quarterly meeting on June 24, via Zoom, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Board of Trustees unanimously approved four new degree programs – an Associate of Applied Science degree program in Renewable Energy Technology (RET), and Bachelor of Science degree programs in Agroecology, Agricultural Business, and Animal Science.

In a list published last week on Forbes.com, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) was ranked as one of the top Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with online degree programs in the U.S. in 2023. The UVI online degree program was recognized among ten distinguished HBCUs for its low student-to-faculty ratio, relatively high student retention rate, and low average net price per year.
