The Caribbean Writer (TCW) has issued a call for submissions for Volume 36 under the 2021 theme: “Disruption, Disguise, and Illuminations.” More and more, as history meets day-to-day experiences, epiphanies unfold, and, as we self-interrogate the disruption motifs in many of these illuminations, the roots of prevailing disruptions emerge, complicated by disguise. Writers are invited to offer for consideration creative works exploring this theme in its widest permutations.

Members of the media are invited to cover the University of the Virgin Islands’ Fifty-Seventh Annual Commencement Ceremony at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 14, virtually. The online commencement ceremony will honor the 2021 graduates from the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas and the UVI extension campus at the University of St. Martin.

Jackeima Flemming was crowned Miss University of the Virgin Islands 2021-2022 at the 41st Annual Miss UVI Ambassadorial Virtual Competition held on Saturday, April 24, 2021, on St. Thomas after competing against three other contestants.   “I am absolutely elated and honored to have been crowned with the honorific title of goodwill ambassador to UVI. The journey was nothing short of amazing and I am excited to continue being of service to my University,” Flemming said.

Dr. Kimberly Mills, executive director for the Virgin Islands Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD), was awarded the Disability and Disasters Award by the Natural Hazards Center. This inaugural award was presented to Dr. Mills because of her efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.
Earth Day

In honor and celebration of Earth Day 2021, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (VIDPNR), the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) are co-hosting a series of webinars and community conversations about solid waste and the Territory’s plans and progress towards lifecycle assessment (LCA), sustainable materials management (SMM) and zero waste (ZW).
New Sorrel Variety

The University of the Virgin Islands School of Agriculture unveiled two new varieties of sorrel to the public on Thursday, April 8, via Facebook live. Sorrel varieties ‘Festival’ and ‘Midnite’ are a combination of Caribbean and African varieties (from Nigeria and Ghana), crossed with a Trinidad variety of Black Sorrel.

The University of the Virgin Islands is deeply disturbed by an alleged sexual assault that was reported in the early morning hours of April 20, 2021. The alleged victim was taken to Juan F. Luis Hospital by UVI Security. The students involved in the incident had participated earlier in an unapproved on-campus party that ended around 3 a.m.

The University of the Virgin Islands Student Government Association invites the public to the 41st annual Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition on Saturday, April 24, at 6 p.m. Themed “The Great Gatsby of the 21st Century,” the ambassadorial competition will be streamed online. Tickets to the online event are $10 for the early bird special and $15 for regular admission.
